Rapid growth is expected for Taiwan's biotech industry,
as more than $330 million of government investment is
slated for the field in 2001 -- a level increasing by
25 percent year-to-year. This investment builds off
of a billion-dollar foundation of 52 globally-relevant
biotechnology investment projects initiated in the past
few years.
U.S.
biomedicine companies can partner with Taiwan firms
in specialized areas to better exploit the rapid development
and vast potential of this "industry in creation."
The areas for collaboration highlighted in the webcast
range from technology fields (biochips, bioinformatics,
MEMS, etc) through collaboration strategies (joint clinical
research trials, commercial targeting of Asia-prevalent
diseases, the genomics of Asian bio-diversity, etc)
to 'alliance drivers' (local financing sources, opportunities
for Asian application of U.S. technology, regional marketing
agreements, etc).
Particular
focus is given to areas where Taiwan's ambitions for
biotechnology leadership in Asia overlap its proven
experience as a global market-maker for computer componentry,
laptop and notebook assembly and semiconductor foundry
production. The webcast critically examines the question
of where Taiwan's global IT leadership is relevant to
the global biotechnology business, and where it is not.
Asia
has a vital role to play if the pace and scope of the
global biotechnology boom is to continue. Taiwan is
an Asian leader in this field and -- as proven in past
decades in the Info Tech field -- a dependable partner
for U.S. technology leaders. The 'BioInformatics and
Genomics Business Opportunities in Taiwan' webcast examines
the range of issues critical to an understanding of
partnership opportunities: IT partnership and strategic
cooperation in research and clinical trials; the challenges
of regulatory coordination and globalization; new sources
for financing collaborative projects; and the commercialization
of biomedicine technologies through US-Taiwan business
partnerships.
