Smithsonian's Nobel Expert
to Speak at Spirit of Innovation Award
William A. Eastman, of the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and
Innovation at the Smithsonian Institution, delivered the keynote presentation.
Eastman is project historian and coordinator of the exhibition "Nobel Voices -- Celebrating 100 years of the Nobel Prize." His Chattanooga presentation -- "Spirit of Innovation" -- focused on the concepts of creativity, motivational sparks and the social visions of Nobel laureates recognized for advances in science, literature and diplomacy.
The Chamber's Spirit of Innovation Award is based on the premise that innovation boosts productivity, which leads to prosperity. The Chamber established this award in 2001 to recognize the regional enterprises that best exemplify this inventive and progressive spirit.
"We've learned from the experts at the Smithsonian that ours is the first and only community-based award for innovation to be created by a Chamber of Commerce. That discovery adds to the obvious value of local recognition. And it raises the bar for our nominees and judges alike," says Jim Frierson, chair of this year's event.
